Belfast’s Lord Mayor, and a Sinn Féin candidate in next month’s general election, has been subjected to sectarian abuse, most likely from Loyalist groups.

John Finucane, who is contesting the North Belfast constituency in the general election on December 12, was targeted by a hateful banner, which has since been removed by the Police.

Finucane is the son of Irish human rights lawyer, and Republican sympathiser, Pat Finucane, who was murdered by Loyalist gunmen in February 1989.

Finucane Senior is widely believed to have been the victim of a targeted assassination by elements connected to the British secret state.

His state-sanctioned murder, in front of his family, is one of the most controversial cases of “collusion” (meaning cooperation between Loyalist terrorists and British secret services) during the Northern Ireland troubles.

Reacting to the latest incident affecting the Finucane family, the leader of Sinn Féin, Mary Lou McDonald, decried the “appalling and dangerous” campaign of “harassment, intimidation and threats against John Finucane and his family”.

Finucane Junior is trying to unseat the Democratic Unionist Party’s Nigel Dodds in the North Belfast constituency at next month’s general election.
