Let’s Know Islam (108)
Today, we study another miraculous aspect of Holy Quran.
As of the divine revelation of Holy Quran; innumerable books, articles, and studies have been penned on the eloquence, literary style, and miraculous aspects of Holy Quran. In the previous weeks, we studied some of the miraculous features of this Holy Book. This week, we briefly research the numerical miracles of this Holy Book. Within Holy Quran, the numerical miracle and the mathematical order of words has captured the attention of many, encouraging them to research in this domain. Their studies prove the existence of a particular mathematical relationship between numbers and words in Holy Quran.
An Egyptian biochemist, Dr. Reshad Khalifa, carried out a series of studies on the disconnected letters which come at the beginning of a number of surahs of Holy Quran. He intended to unravel the mystery and definition of these disjoined letters. Upon researching for a few years, he published the outcomes of his studies in this domain in the year 1973, in his book, entitled: “Miracle of Holy Quran”. By mathematical calculations, he manifested that there is a close relationship between the disconnected letters that come at the beginning of some Surahs and the letters used in those surahs. In fact, the beginning disjoined letters were used to a larger extent throughout the related surahs, compared to other surahs of Holy Quran.
In this manner, it can be said that the letters of Holy Quran which have been descended on the Prophet of Islam, throughout his prophet hood, maintain a particular mathematical order. Meanwhile, further studies should be carried out in this domain to reach a clear conclusion.
The exegete of Holy Quran, Allameh Tabatabai, has made an interesting point in regard to disconnected letters that come at the beginning of some of the surahs of Holy Quran, noting the surahs which begin with the same disconnected letters are similar to each other in regard to content.
Throughout his studies, Reshad Khalifa revealed a mathematical system which he believes governs Holy Quran. He considers 19 as a key number in Holy Quran. For instance, he notes that Surat al-Alaq maintains 19 ayahs, and Holy Quran is made of 114 surahs, which are divisible by 19. On this basis, he has carried out a number of calculations in relation to number 19 in Holy Quran and has presented a number of examples in order to prove his argument.
The other fact about the mathematical order of Holy Quran is the numerical proportion of some of the terms which are each other’s synonyms and/or antonyms. For instances, the terms “world” and “hereafter” have been mentioned in Holy Quran; the same number of times. The words Satan and angels have also been mentioned almost equal number of times in this Holy Book.
Scientists have carried out studies in relation to proportionality of terms in Holy Quran and have reached interesting outcomes.
In general, scientists have accepted the existence of a mathematical order between letters and words in Holy Quran.
The numerical order in Holy Quran shows that this Holy Book has been descended by the one and only creator of the world, God Almighty. Meanwhile, other aspects of the miraculous nature of Holy Quran could also be revealed in the future, upon the scientific progress and development of mankind.
As it was mentioned, Holy Quran guides mankind toward prosperity. What we have stated are only a few examples of the miraculous nature of this Holy Book. Holy Quran maintains an apparent and inner aspect, and Quranic teachings maintain in-depth layers. Obviously, with the passage of time and enhancement of mankind’s awareness, other dimensions of this heavenly book are revealed.
Holy Quran is the main source for studies on Islamic School of Thought. Holy Quran is the only book that can pave the way for access of mankind to an ideal community. Holy Quran, right from the beginning, was considered as a unique miracle and a clear proof of the divine appointment of Prophet of Islam, Mohammad (Blessings of God upon him and his progeny).
In the contemporary era, more than fourteen centuries after the divine revelation of Holy Quran; mankind has discovered many mysteries of the world of creation. One of the characteristic features of Holy Quran is that it remains fresh for all generations of mankind.
