Pars Today – 14 countries, led by Mexico and Spain, have called for limiting the use of the veto power in the UN Security Council.

According to Pars Today, quoting Tasnim News Agency, 14 countries, led by Spain and Mexico, by signing a formal letter, have called for limiting the use of the "veto power" in the United Nations Security Council. This action could directly prevent the continuation of unilateral approaches against Iran.

In their letter, these countries emphasized the effective implementation of Article 27, Paragraph 3 of the UN Charter, which states that any country directly involved in a dispute must abstain from voting in the UN Security Council.

Based on this initiative, if this article is strictly implemented, countries directly involved in conflicts, including the US regarding Iran, will no longer be able to use their veto to block the adoption of resolutions aimed at stopping aggression or condemning their actions.

The letter, sent to senior UN officials including Antonio Guterres, also refers to recent instances where the vetoes of the US and its allies have prevented the adoption of balanced positions regarding regional developments, particularly in relation to Iran, Lebanon, and Gaza.

The signatory countries of this letter, including Austria, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Estonia, Kuwait, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Mexico, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and East Timor, recalling the primary mission of the United Nations to maintain international peace and security, have emphasized that the implementation of this overlooked provision can be an effective step towards restoring justice and impartiality to the global decision-making mechanism.
