As for the UN, Yemen cannot contain the coronavirus pandemic unless the world body stops supporting Saudi Arabia with tacit consent. Yemen needs more than joint statements and emergency food aid appeals. UN statements need to follow with actions and medical aid has to reach the Yemenis now.

    War-party Washington is broke

America’s wars on Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Yemen – which were based on lies and paid for by American taxpayers and Saudi cash - have ended with a beaten and bankrupt America. No wonder the political class in Washington cannot afford to keep its military bases running in Europe or Far East, or buy new weaponry. The big picture remains the same: Total defeat and bankruptcy for war-party Washington.

This is while efforts are underway through an emergency donor conference to support the war-torn country as it faces a coronavirus catastrophe in the sixth year of the Saudi-led military campaign. Aid groups have warned that the fast-spreading virus could wreak havoc after years of war and amid crippling funding shortages.

Persian Gulf needs no US naval presence, weapons

    May 04, 2020 15:20

The United States is not a force for peace and stability in the Persian Gulf. The US must turn away from its deadly arms trade with the Arab littoral states, stop showing the flag and throwing grenade into the maritime areas, and focus instead on abiding by international law that says the region should be secured and protected by the littoral states only, including Iran.

Vietnam War: The US still hasn’t learned its lessons

    May 03, 2020 09:24

April 30, 2020 marked the 45th anniversary of the fall of Saigon and ignominious end to the war on Vietnam waged by the United States. The twofold lesson from that imperialistic escapade should have been first, respect other nation’s sovereignty, and second, never, ever wage war against popular movements. Unfortunately, Washington has not only failed to learn from its murderous mistakes, but also continues to support other would-be hegemons in their unwinnable wars against people’s uprisings.

Advocates for workers say measures the Persian Gulf’s Arab governments have announced to shore up their economies and slow the coronavirus’s spread do not do enough to protect laborers. King Salman of Saudi Arabia announced last month that he would cover the treatment of anyone suffering from COVID-19 in the kingdom, including foreigners. But a $2.4-billion aid package that will partially cover the salaries of private sector workers applies only to Saudi citizens.
