The death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic in Iran has exceeded 140,000, the Health Ministry said.

According to Tasnim news agency, figures released by the Ministry on Sunday show that the coronavirus has taken the lives of 50 patients over the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll since the outbreak of the pandemic in February 2020 to 140,021.

According to the statistics, 2,229 new cases of COVID-19 infection have been reported across the country over the past 24 hours, with 382 of them having been hospitalized.

More than 6.85 million individuals have recovered or been discharged from hospitals out of a total of over 7,151,000 who have contracted the disease, the Ministry added.

Some 1,570 victims of COVID-19 are in severe condition and are being treated in intensive care facilities, it said.

The Ministry also said that over 63.8 million Iranians have received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, over 56.65 million have received the second dosage, and more than 25.84 million have gotten the booster shots.

The number of people infected with COVID-19 across the world has surpassed 481 million and the death toll has exceeded 6.14 million.
