  • Iran becomes UN Disarmament Conference Chair

Pars Today- The Islamic Republic of Iran became the chair of the UN Disarmament Conference.

Iran's permanent envoy to the UN base in Geneva, Ali Bahraini, in the first session of the conference, explaining Tehran's plans and programs during its chairmanship, said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran, alongside other peace-seeking and anti-war and anti-violence countries, will pursue international peace and security through obliteration of Weapons of Mass Destruction, especially nuclear weapons."

The Conference on Disarmament, which was set up in 1978, as the only body for multilateral international talks in the field of disarmament, is missioned to negotiate for compilation and conclusion of international conventions in the field.

The CD is responsible for negotiations of disarmament, compilation and finalization of numerous international disarmament conventions including Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) and Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

During its chairing of the CD, the Islamic Republic of Iran will pursue implementation of commitments of possessors of nuclear weapons pertaining to complete annihilation of these weapons, irrecoverability and verifiability of nuclear weapons, WMD-free Middle East, presentation of security guarantees to non-nuclear governments, space weapons competition ban and so on.
