Pars Today – The Ababil-3 drone is a symbol of Iran’s self-sufficiency in combat drone technology and plays an important role in strengthening the country’s deterrence capabilities.

The Ababil-3 is a multi-purpose tactical drone made in Iran, designed for reconnaissance, surveillance, and precision strike missions. According to Pars Today, this drone was initially built as a suicide drone carrying 40 kilograms of explosives. Later, in response to new requirements, it was adapted into a reconnaissance drone, and eventually, through armament, evolved into an armed drone.

Design features:
The Ababil-3 has a streamlined, single-piece fuselage with a high-wing configuration and twin vertical stabilizers, which enhance its aerodynamic performance. The body is made primarily of lightweight composite materials, giving it flexibility to withstand certain types of stress. The drone is about 3 meters in length, with a wingspan of roughly 4.5 meters. This compact size allows for easier deployment and launch from various platforms, including mobile ground units, military vehicles, and even naval vessels.

Engine and performance:
The Ababil-3 is powered by a piston engine driving a two-blade propeller. The engine is mounted at the rear of the fuselage and provides enough thrust to reach speeds of around 150 to 200 kilometers per hour. With its fuel capacity, the drone can remain airborne for up to 8 hours or achieve a range of 250 kilometers.

Sensors and payloads:
The Ababil-3 is equipped with an optical system mounted under its fuselage, which includes electro-optical (EO) daytime cameras and infrared (IR) thermal sensors. These systems enable the drone to conduct real-time surveillance and reconnaissance operations both during the day and at night.

Weapons and offensive capabilities:
The Ababil-3 is capable of carrying various miniature guided munitions, transforming it from a purely reconnaissance drone into an offensive platform. It can be equipped with small guided bombs or air-to-surface missiles, enabling it to engage both stationary and moving targets with high precision.

Deployment and tactical use:
The Ababil-3 is utilized by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the Iranian Army, and other military units. It is designed to serve across different branches and be employed in a variety of mission types.
