Iran has expressed its condolences to the Italian government and nation over a deadly earthquake in the country’s central region.

On Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi voiced Iran’s sorrows over the quake and wished a speedy recovery for its victims.

Earlier on Wednesday, a powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit central Italy, causing extensive damage and leaving at least 120 people dead and over 368 injured.

"This is not a final toll," said Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, noting that many people were still trapped under rubble.

He also vowed that "no family, no city, no hamlet will be left behind."

The deaths were reported in the towns of Amatrice, Accumoli and Arquata del Tronto, all situated in a mountainous area straddling the regions of Lazio and Marche.

Search and rescue teams from around the country have gathered in the affected regions and tents have been setup for those displaced by the quake.

Appeals have been made the national blood donation service for donors of all blood types.
