  • States acting against regional interests to reach dead end: Assad

The Syrian president has slammed Saudi Arabia and Turkey for supporting the terrorists active in his country, saying the states that turn a blind eye to the interests of nations in the region will not be able to advance their agendas.

According to Press TV, Bashar al-Assad made the remarks in a meeting with Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, and his delegation in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Thursday.

The Syrian leader said Riyadh and Ankara are playing a destructive role in the crisis plaguing his country by supporting the Takfiri terror groups operating against the Damascus government.

The recent developments in Turkey as well as the blows the Aal-e Saud regime has suffered across the region proved that the countries which are dead set against the interests of regional people will always reach an impasse, Assad said.

Touching on the advances of the Syrian army and its allies in the Aleppo battle, he also noted that the gains show the tide is turning in favor of the resistance front.

Assad further said the sponsors of terrorists such as the US, Saudi Arabia and Jordan are disappointed with the extremist groups in northern Syria, so they have now focused on those active in the country’s south.

The Syrian head of state also described the July 15 failed military coup in Turkey as an alarm for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, calling on Ankara to abandon its controversial policies toward the region, especially Syria.

He also thanked the Islamic Republic and Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei for standing by the Syrian nation, saying the Islamic Republic will be Syria’s major trade partner when the conflict in Arab country is over.

For his part, Boroujerdi reiterated Iran’s support for Syria in its fight against terrorism.

In another development on Thursday, Boroujerdi held a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, during which the two sides discussed bilateral relations and joint cooperation between Tehran and Damascus.

The senior Iranian lawmaker expressed confidence that Syria and the axis of resistance will achieve victory soon with Iran’s support for the Syrian president and people in their anti-terror fight.

On Wednesday, Boroujerdi also met with Syria’s Parliament Speaker Hadiyeh al-Abbas in Damascus.
