Two teenagers have opened fire at an elementary school in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, killing seven people before taking their own lives.

Sao Paulo police said the two shooters, wearing face masks, entered the Raul Brasil elementary school in Suzano on Wednesday at about 9:30 am local time. They fired weapons.

Police said nine people died in the incident, including five children, one adult who worked at the institution and one person who was standing just outside the school as well as the two attackers.

The shooting also left 17 people wounded, mostly children, police said in a written statement. The state of their health was not immediately known.

Nearly 1,000 children reportedly attend the school.

Shortly before the killings at the Raul Brasil school, another shooting took place about 500 meters from the institution, Globo TV network quoted police as saying. It was not yet clear whether the incidents were connected.

School shootings are rare in the Latin American country, even though it is among the world's most violent, with more annual killings than any other. The last major school massacre took place in 2011, when 12 children were killed by an ex-pupil in Rio de Janeiro.
