US sets $200,000 levy on Spanish vessels
Pars Today – The US Federal Maritime Commission has proposed imposing a $200,000 fee on each voyage by Spanish-flagged vessels and restricting imports of certain Spanish goods, accusing Spain of limiting access to its ports for US-flagged ships.
According to Pars Today, citing the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the US Federal Maritime Commission on Wednesday proposed imposing fees on all Spanish-flagged vessels and restricting imports of certain goods from the European country. The commission alleges that Spain has created unfavorable conditions for US-flagged vessels operating in maritime transportation.
The commission launched an investigation into the matter in December 2024, alleging that Spain had prevented US-flagged vessels from accessing its ports. According to the commission, some of these vessels were carrying cargo under the US Maritime Administration’s (MARAD) Maritime Security Program.
Under the proposal, a fee of $200,000 would be imposed for each voyage by Spanish-flagged vessels. Imports of certain Spanish products could also face restrictions, including perfumes and cosmetics, oils and fats, ceramics, stone articles, sugar, and confectionery.
The commission argued that unfavorable conditions in maritime transportation have serious consequences for the efficiency and reliability of international maritime supply chains, US exports, national security, and the country’s merchant fleet.
