SNP leader sets out conditions for backing Labour
The Leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), Nicola Sturgeon, has finally set out the conditions under which she would support the Labour Party in forming and sustaining a government.
According to Press TV, Sturgeon, who is also Scotland’s First Minister, has made clear that she would not entertain the idea of entering into a formal coalition with Labour (in a hung Parliament scenario), but instead would consider backing a “minority” Labour government.
In an interview with the BBC yesterday, Sturgeon said this support would be guided on an “issue-by-issue” basis.
The SNP leader’s clarification on the issue follows months of speculation about the Scottish Nationalists’ plans and intentions in an immediate post-election scenario.
In order to attract the SNP’s support, the Labour Party would, above all, need to support the “principle” of a second Scottish independence referendum, Sturgeon said.
Furthermore, the SNP leader said that Labour would need to agree to granting greater powers to the Scottish Parliament, in addition to calling an end to economic austerity.
