  • Indian farmers clash with police over farm reforms

Indian police have fired tear gas and water cannon on Thursday in clashes with several thousand farmers marching to New Delhi to protest against recent agricultural reforms.

The confrontation happened when police tried to stop the farmers from the northern state of Punjab as they were crossing a bridge about 200 kilometers (120 miles) from New Delhi.

Armed with sticks and rocks, some of the farmers threw police barriers into the river.

The police opened fire with water cannon and tear gas, further enraging the protesters.

After a two-hour standoff, police eventually allowed the marchers to continue towards the capital.
