Pars Today's Iran and world news package
How many nuclear warheads are there in the world?
Pars Today- The ambassador and permanent representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the UN delivered a speech at the 2025 Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.
Ali Bahraini, Iran's envoy and permanent representative to the UN, expressed concern over the continuation of unprecedented armed rivalry, rhetoric and threats, especially in the field of nuclear weapons, concurrent with the 2025 Disarmament Conference, and said, "A remarkable amount of resources which could be appropriated to social and economic development and creation of peace and sustainable security in the world, has been spent on maintenance, production and renovation of nuclear weapons and warmongering." According to Pars Today, Bahraini added, "Unfortunately, the nuclear-armed countries not only have not fulfilled their obligations regarding the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), they have also sought to renew and reconstruct their nuclear arsenals."
The Iranian diplomat made it clear, "There are nearly 12,000 nuclear warheads in the world, 3,880 of which are active and the nuclear-armed countries, especially the NATO member states, continue their dependence on nuclear weapons through violation of the legally binding obligations under the NPT and the agreements concluded at the revision conferences."
Describing nuclear weapons as an alarm for a [likely] nuclear war and a threat to the human life and security, Bahraini stated that nuclear disarmament is essential for strengthening peace and security.
Iran's permanent envoy to the UN stressed, "As long as there are nuclear weapons, it will be possible to use them. So, nuclear disarmament should remain as a top priority for the international community in the field of disarmament; and abiding by obligations should be supported and taken into consideration unanimously in a bid to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons."
He made it clear, "West Asia has not yet been freed from nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction due to the illegal activities and [existence] of nuclear arsenals of the Israeli regime. As a result of continuation of possessing nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destructions and refraining from putting its non-peaceful nuclear activities under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency, this regime has been the main obstacle for materialization of this issue."
Bahraini reiterated, "Iran asks the international community to force the Israeli regime to join the NPT as a non-nuclear member, annihilate all its nuclear weapons irretrievably and put all its facilities and activities under the control and monitoring of the International Atomic Energy Agency."
It should be said that the UN 2025 Disarmament Conference kicked off on January 21 as a multilateral negotiation institution for disarmament. This institution is duty-bound to pursue talks and conclusion of international agreements in the field of disarmament and arms control, including nuclear disarmament.
