Pars Today – The United Nations Security Council did not approve the draft resolution submitted by South Korea, the Council’s rotating president, on the “continuation of lifting sanctions on Iran” aimed at preventing the reimposition of sanctions against the country.

The draft resolution submitted by South Korea, as the rotating president of the Security Council this month (September), was put to a vote today, Thursday, under Article 11 of Resolution 2231 (2015). The resolution received only 4 votes in favor out of the 15 Security Council members, while 9 countries voted against it and 2 abstained.

According to Pars Today, citing IRIB News Agency, any resolution requires 9 votes from the 15-member Council to pass. As anticipated, the resolution failed to secure the necessary votes. However, it was brought to a vote under pressure from the United States and three European countries aiming to exert pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran before the 30-day deadline expired.

In fact, the United Nations Security Council failed to approve a draft resolution aimed at preventing the rapid reinstatement of sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA). The resolution, which sought to maintain the suspension of sanctions on Iran, did not secure the required 9 votes.

China, Russia, Pakistan, and Algeria voted in favor of the resolution to continue the suspension of sanctions on Iran. Nine countries — the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia — voted against it, while Guyana and South Korea abstained.
