Senator Murphy calls US sanctions on Iran a “show”

Pars Today – Democratic US Senator Chris Murphy described the Trump administration’s new sanctions against Iran as a publicity stunt and empty rhetoric, saying none of Trump’s war aims against Iran had been achieved.

According to Pars Today, citing IRIB, Murphy wrote in a post on X on Monday night about the new US sanctions against Iran: “D-Day” [the day the operation began] is a desperate spectacle. Iran is winning the war and Trump is losing, while Americans are paying a very, very high price. Let’s take a look at where we are and why these sanctions are yet another foolish move.

Murphy added: “First, let’s remember that none of Trump’s war aims have been achieved. The [Iranian] government remains intact and stable. They still have their missiles, drones, and nuclear program. They are even mocking us and visiting their new missile sites.”

Murphy stressed: “And worse, Iran did not control the Strait of Hormuz before the war. Now it does. Traffic through the Persian Gulf has been restricted, and the only way for any ship to pass is through a $1 billion escort mission funded by American taxpayers. This is a disaster. Gasoline prices remain high.

“He acknowledged: ‘Today, Trump is unveiling an “Economic D-Day” against Iran because Iran has him in a bind. He will use all kinds of tough rhetoric, but it is empty rhetoric. Why? Well, first of all, we have essentially sanctioned everything we can in Iran. There is little left. “D-Day” is just saber-rattling.’”

D-Day is a U.S. military term referring to the start of a major offensive operation during a war.

Chris Murphy added: “Second, Iran can survive economically as long as China continues to buy its oil, and there is no indication that China is going to stop. Worse, Trump’s obsession with Iran has given China new leverage.

“Maybe China will reduce its purchases of Iranian oil. But only if we give them more AI microchips. Or sell Taiwan. Most likely, we are not applying any real pressure on China because we know that, in retaliation, they would cut off their exports of critical minerals to the United States.”
