Italy's PM: A leader deserving admiration?
-
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni
Pars Today – Praise from world politicians for Italy's Prime Minister has become a subject of international news coverage in various forms.
US President Donald Trump who was in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt last Monday for a Gaza peace agreement, referred to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as a "very beautiful" person. With Meloni standing behind him, Trump said, "Italy has a beautiful young woman. I'm not allowed to say that because if you say that, it will be the end of your political career. But she's a beautiful woman. If you use the word 'beautiful' in the United States for a woman, it will be the end of your political career. But I'll take a risk and say it." Trump then continued his praise of Meloni, calling her a respectable woman and a successful politician. According to Pars Today, however, Trump was not the only one to admire the Italian leader. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, while shaking hands with Meloni in Sharm El-Sheikh, told her, "I saw you getting off the plane. You look wonderful." Furthermore, several months ago, a picture of Edi Rama, the Prime Minister of Albania, kneeling before Giorgia Meloni received widespread coverage in global media.
What kind of woman is hidden behind Meloni's face?
This praise for Meloni comes as a different woman is hidden behind this face—a woman whose name is now tied to Israel's war crimes in Gaza. It was just recently that Meloni stated that her name and those of two of her ministers had been reported to the International Criminal Court (ICC) on accusations of "complicity in genocide" related to the Israeli regime's attack on Gaza.
The lawsuit against Meloni, reportedly signed by around 50 people, including law professors, lawyers, and several public figures, states: "The Italian government, by supporting Israel, particularly through the supply of lethal weapons, has become complicit in the ongoing genocide and very serious war crimes and crimes against humanity being perpetrated in Palestine."
Meanwhile, Majdi al-Karbaei, a former Tunisian parliament member residing in Italy, said, "This complaint is a historic step on the path of international accountability, and it is the result of the extensive efforts of the Association of Lawyers and Jurists for Palestine, which I am honored to be one of the signatories of." Contrary to some initial reports, this complaint has been submitted directly to the ICC prosecutor and has so far been supported by over 30,000 citizens, activists, and a number of prominent academics and legal figures.
Meloni: A character opposed to Hamas
Meloni leads a right-wing government that has been one of Israel's strongest allies in the European Union. Although she has emphasized that Italy intends to support the establishment of a Palestinian state and will continue its humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, she believes that the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) must be excluded from any governmental role.
The political divide between Meloni and her people in Italy
Political experts believe there is a political struggle between the Italian government and its people. On one hand, the world has seen Italians marching against Israel's crimes in Gaza, and on the other, the government recently paved the way for a team from the Zionist regime to play in the country. According to analysts, the Meloni government's insistence on holding the match at this time had roots in her clear political motivations. With this move, Giorgia Meloni's government wanted to send a message that it has no desire to join any wave of sports or political boycotts against Israel and insists on its position as a steadfast ally of Tel Aviv.
