In 1979 on this day, Imam Khomeini returned home after 15 years of exile. Following the escape of Mohammad Reza Shah from Iran on January 16, 1979, Shapour Bakhtiar, the last premier of Shah's regime, intended to close airports to prevent the beloved leader's return.
