Hollywood and US Elections
The election campaigns of the two US presidential hopefuls, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, similar to previous US presidential election campaigns, have enlisted a large number of Hollywood actors, directors, and producers as the supporters of the candidates running for president in the US. This is one of the tactics which electoral candidates adopt in all countries in order to garner more votes. This has also been a common approach of election candidates in the US.
In the run-up to the US presidential elections on November 8, and at the peak of the presidential race; many Hollywood actors, directors, and producers have embarked upon the scene. Both US presidential hopefuls, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, have taken snapshots with Hollywood stars and/or have promoted their election campaigns with the participation of Hollywood stars. Political analysts believe that such tactics highly assist the presidential candidates in garnering votes. This trend is in fact a bilateral agreement. On one hand, the candidates garner further votes, and on the other hand, Hollywood stars find the opportunity to make the headlines in the US.
In the meanwhile, the American documentarist, Michael Moore, introduced his latest production which is on Donald Trump, on Tuesday, October 18. His latest documentary, which is named “Michael Moore in TrumpLand”, was scheduled to be premiered in New York and Los Angeles.
This film has depicted Trump’s activities in Ohio. Michael Moore had filmed this documentary two weeks ago, in two consecutive nights. Moore, who is one of the opponents of Donald Trump, told the audience that he intends to display this documentary for as many Americans as possible.
Recently, the American artists have launched their own campaign, in which many well-known figures call on Americans to attend polling stations, irrespective of whether they support the Republican or Democrat candidate. This campaign has been supported by a number of Hollywood actors and actresses, such as Leonardo Dicaprio, Robert De Niro, Julia Roberts, Emma Stone, David Schwimmer, Samuel Jackson, Olivia Wild, Edward Norton, and a number of the other celebrities of the US film and entertainment industry.
The most important work of this campaign has been to produce video clips in the presence of Hollywood celebrities, which have been posted on cyberspace and social networks. Within this 30-second to 60-second video clips, well-known figures speak of their concerns and expectations in the run-up to US presidential elections on November 8. The main question of all of these video clips is what do you care about?
It is interesting to know that the video clips of this campaign have been made by famous American producers such as Tom McCarthy and David Owen Russell.
In addition to this usual trend, controversies have also been stirred. For instance, the remarks made by Donald Trump have stirred controversies and has led many artists to voice support for Clinton, such as Meryl Streep and Jane Fonda.
In the meantime, one of the most important supporters of the Republican Party, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has refused to voice support for Donald Trump. Schwarzenegger, who played in the action movies of the 1980s, believes that Donald Trump maintains harsh and radical viewpoints.
It should be pointed out that both US presidential candidates have made several vows to American people and Hollywood. However, the remarks recently made by Trump have led to fresh controversies, causing artists to react. Some like Clint Eastwood believe that one should not be sensitive to these remarks. This American actor recently pointed out that people should not pause over remarks made by Trump. Eastwood was referring to the remarks made by Trump on other religious and ethical groups, which have been assessed as racist remarks by a large number of politicians, analysts, and ordinary people.
The well-known American actor, Robert De Niro, named Donald Trump a national disaster and criticized American people for giving the opportunity to a stupid figure such as Trump to become the US president. De Niro noted that he wanted to punch Trump in the face, while adding that is Trump the person Americans want as US president?
A while ago, Trump, in one of his outrageous remarks, said that Muslims should be banned from entering the US. The American actor, Will Smith, stood firm against Trump’s allegations, naming them shameful.
This African-American Hollywood actor reminded that we should see people as they are; and not as the way they have been introduced to us. Now, this American billionaire intends to deport all Muslims from the US and obstruct the entry of Muslims to US.
It is noteworthy that upon Trump’s controversial remarks on Muslims, The Council on American-Islam Relations (CAIR) strongly reacted to Trump’s outrageous remarks. This council called on all Muslims to report any violent crime against them.
In addition to participation in campaigns and press conferences, the Hollywood celebrities also provided financial assistance to election candidates, once again manifesting that Hollywood leaves a huge impact on the US elections. Meanwhile, the American director, Steven Spielberg, and the CEO of DreamWorks Animation, Jeffrey Katzenberg, have donated $1 million to Hillary Clinton’s Political Action Committee (PAC).
These two Hollywood celebrities also provided the same amount of financial assistance to Barack Obama’s election campaign in the run-up to US presidential elections in the year 2012.
Furthermore, the director of the new Star Wars motion picture, Jeffrey Jacob Abrams, in the company of his wife, donated a million dollars to Hillary Clinton’s election campaign.
