Germany: Trump is responsible for rising tensions with Iran

Pars Today – Germany’s president has blamed US President Donald Trump for the Israeli attacks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities and the escalation of resulting tensions.

Speaking to ZDF television, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) in 2018 was the root cause of heightened nuclear tensions.

Steinmeier, who served as Germany’s foreign minister during the Iran nuclear negotiations, said: “In 2015, after lengthy talks, an agreement was reached with Iran over its nuclear program. At that time, Iran was far from today’s dangerous capabilities.”

He added, “It was Trump who first tore up the agreement, and Iran responded by further advancing its nuclear program.”
