Former Swedish Foreign Minister Jan Eliasson
Pars Today – Former Swedish Foreign Minister Jan Eliasson criticized the European Troika for undermining their capacity to play an independent role in West Asia by reimposing sanctions on Iran.
Eliasson, former UN Deputy Secretary-General and Swedish Foreign Minister, described the activation of the “snapback” mechanism on the social media platform X as a step backward in diplomacy with Iran.
He added that the return of sanctions represents another setback for effective diplomacy toward Iran. Eliasson emphasized that the European Troika, by raising the “snapback” mechanism in the UN Security Council—especially after the US and Israeli attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities—damaged their independent role in West Asia. /ISNA
