US President Joe Biden says he plans to run for reelection in 2024, but he is not ready to make an official announcement yet.

“I plan on running ... but we're not prepared to announce it yet,” the 80-year-old Democrat told an interview with NBC on Monday.

The president has consistently stated his plans to run for re-election, but has not made a formal announcement.

Citing several unidentified sources, NBC News reported that top White House advisers are set to make final decisions on launching Biden’s re-election campaign.

"The decision part is over, but he resents the pressure to have to announce what he’s already decided," said one source familiar with the matter.

If Biden does declare his decision to run, he would not face serious challenges from his own party.

On the Republican side, the current frontrunner is former president Donald Trump, who is facing criminal charges.

Trump, who announced his presidential campaign in November, was charged with 34 felony counts related to payments to two women and could also face additional charges from federal prosecutors and the Fulton County district attorney.

Trump says the indictment and other legal troubles would carry him to the 2024 Republican nomination.
