Lack of consensus in the UNSC over snapback mechanism

Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations
Pars Today – The UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs acknowledged during a Security Council meeting that there are serious differences among Council members regarding the continued validity of Resolution 2231 and the so-called snapback mechanism.
Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, while supporting the positions of China, Russia, Algeria, and Pakistan, stressed that holding this meeting is unlawful in light of the expiration of Resolution 2231, and that the UN Secretary-General has no authority to convene it. Iravani stated that any attempt by any state or body to revive, reinterpret, or enforce expired provisions is null and void, and constitutes a clear abuse of the Security Council’s powers and procedures.
He added that Resolution 2231 definitively expired on 18 October 2025, and from that date all provisions, measures, and restrictions related to Iran’s nuclear issue have permanently ceased to apply. / IRNA
