Stronger Parliament can better solve people’s problems: Iranian First VP
Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri highlighted the importance of high turnout in the upcoming elections and said the stronger the parliament is, the better it can solve the people’s problems.
According to Tasnim news agency, Jahangiri told reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet session in Tehran on Wednesday “At the current juncture, due to the international and regional conditions, the parliamentary elections have become more important than in the past.”
He further emphasized that the Iranian people have proven their support for the Islamic Republic over the past 41 years (since the Islamic Revolution’s victory) at critical junctures that the country needed their crucial presence.
“We need this presence now and, God willing, in the elections on February 21, we will witness the extensive presence of the people,” he said.
“The stronger the parliament is, the greater its ability is to solve problems” the first vice-president went on to say.
The election campaigns officially began in Iran at 00:00 Thursday Feb. 13 and will last until the end of Wednesday, February 19.
The nationwide votes for the parliament and the midterm election of the Assembly of Experts will be held simultaneously on Friday, February 21.
The campaigns for the Assembly of Experts midterm election had already begun on February 6.
A total of 7,148 candidates, including dozens of Iranians from the religious minorities, are running for the parliament. There are 290 seats in the parliament up for grabs.
In capital Tehran, 1,453 candidates are contesting one of the 30 allocated seats on the legislature.
The lawmakers are elected for a 4-year term, with no limitation for the incumbent or former parliamentarians to run again.
