Iran holds largest capacity for umbilical cord blood stem cells in West Asia

Pars Today – A member of the scientific board at Iran’s Royan Research Institute said that the most important current activity of Royan Stem Cell Technology Company is the preservation of umbilical cord blood stem cells.
Umbilical cord blood, as a valuable source of stem cells, plays a vital role in treating blood-related diseases. According to Pars Today, quoting ISNA, Morteza Zarabi, a faculty member at the Royan Research Institute in Iran, announced that this bank now has the largest capacity for storing umbilical cord blood in the West Asia region.
The CEO of Royan Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cell Bank, referring to the bank’s activities, said that the most important current focus of Royan Stem Cell Technology Company is the preservation of umbilical cord blood stem cells.
Zarabi, noting that umbilical cord blood stem cells can be used in the treatment of blood-related diseases such as various types of leukemia, congenital anemias, thalassemia, and immune system deficiencies, emphasized that these cells can serve as an alternative to bone marrow transplantation for patients with blood disorders.
He added: “We store more than 20,000 umbilical cord blood samples each year.”
The faculty member of Iran’s Royan Research Institute also pointed out the storage of samples from other countries, saying: “In addition to domestic samples, numerous samples from other countries have also been stored in Iran, and we have now reached nearly 250,000 stored cord blood samples. This collection is regarded as a valuable resource for transplant centers.”
