U.S. strikes on targets in the country, followed by the announcement of Maduro’s arrest, prompted an immediate response from the government in Caracas and triggered a wave of international statements. Russia:Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Moscow supports dialogue among the parties involved in Venezuela, emphasizes the country’s right to self-determination without any foreign—especially military—interference, considers Latin America a zone of peace, and backs holding a UN Security Council meeting on Venezuela.
Spain:Spain’s Foreign Ministry called for de-escalation and restraint, stressed the need for all parties to adhere to international law and the UN Charter, and announced Madrid’s readiness to mediate and help achieve a peaceful, negotiated solution.
United States:Reuters, citing a U.S. senator, reported that Marco Rubio said Nicolás Maduro would face criminal charges if he were present in the United States, while also emphasizing that there are no plans for further attacks on Venezuela.
Germany:Germany’s Foreign Ministry said it is following developments in Venezuela with grave concern and has formed a special crisis team to continue diplomatic consultations.
Donald Trump:The U.S. president told The Guardian that the attacks carried out against Venezuela were the result of careful planning.
Venezuela:Officials said that a number of citizens were killed and injured in the U.S. attack. The government in Caracas has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. Venezuelan security forces have been deployed nationwide, and citizens have been urged to remain calm. Oil production and refining are continuing without disruption.
