US attack on Venezuela
Pars Today – Following the US military aggression against Venezuela, the American newspaper The New York Times warned that the Trump administration’s action lacks legal legitimacy and could plunge the United States into an international crisis with dangerous consequences for regional stability and the global order.
In its Saturday editorial, The New York Times cautioned that the US military operation which led to the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, the president of Venezuela, has no legal justification whatsoever and could have serious and far-reaching consequences for regional security and the international system.
According to Pars Today, the New York Times reported that in recent months the Trump administration has deployed a large military force in the Caribbean and has now escalated tensions to an unprecedented level by carrying out a “large-scale attack” on Venezuela.
The newspaper noted that the US president has so far provided no coherent explanation for this action and has launched a military operation without congressional authorization.
Referring to claims by US officials about the lack of democracy in Venezuela, the New York Times editorial emphasized that this cannot serve as a justification for military intervention.
The New York Times also pointed out that a century of experience—from Iraq and Afghanistan to Libya and US-backed coups in Latin America—has shown that attempts to impose regime change in other countries usually lead to greater instability and violence.
The newspaper further dismissed the US government’s claim of fighting “narco-terrorism” as baseless, noting that Venezuela has no role in America’s drug crisis.
According to the New York Times, the main motivation behind the US attack is rooted in the Trump administration’s new national security strategy, which emphasizes “restoring US dominance over the Western Hemisphere.”
The New York Times warned that this unilateral US action could set a precedent, giving other powerful countries an excuse to carry out similar interventions in their neighboring states—a scenario reminiscent of the events that led to the Iraq war in 2003.
The American newspaper concluded that the military attack on Venezuela not only violates domestic and international law but also risks escalating violence within Venezuela, destabilizing the region, and harming the long-term interests of the United States.
