Pars Today – The proposal by the Islamic Republic of Iran to strengthen cohesion in the process of selecting the new President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has been approved at the meeting of the PUIC Executive Committee.

According to Pars Today, citing IRIB News Agency, the meeting of the Executive Committee of the 20th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) was held with the participation of representatives from the parliaments of Iran, Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Oman, Uganda, Nigeria, Tunisia, Senegal, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Chad, Mauritania, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Iranian representatives at the meeting stressed the need to preserve unity, convergence, and cohesion among member states, and presented Iran’s proposal aimed at creating greater coordination and strengthening consensus for the election of the new IPU President from among Islamic countries.

The proposal, related to the candidacies of Oman and Azerbaijan and intended to facilitate decision-making, prevent potential disagreements, and strengthen a consensus-based approach in managing global inter-parliamentary institutions, was welcomed by the Executive Committee members and approved.

Participants described Iran’s approach as contributing to strengthening unity in the Islamic world, enhancing parliamentary cooperation, and improving the effectiveness of the union. They also emphasized the importance of maintaining cohesion among Islamic countries during the process of selecting the new IPU president.

The approval of the proposal highlights Iran’s active role in parliamentary diplomacy in the Islamic world and its efforts to promote consensus-building mechanisms in international and inter-parliamentary institutions, as well as to reduce differences among Islamic countries. This approach could contribute to strengthening solidarity among Islamic nations and increasing the capacity of the union to pursue shared goals and priorities.
