Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj conferred on ways to further develop ties and cooperation between the two countries, especially in the defense sector.

"We are interested in the further expansion of mutual consultations and cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi in defense and security fields," Swaraj said during the meeting in Tehran on Sunday.

Zarif, for his part, welcomed his counterpart's remarks, and described Iran-India defense cooperation as useful for establishing peace and security in the region.

During the meeting, the two top diplomats also exchanged views on the latest developments in Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and other international issues.

Iran and India which have deep historical and cultural relations are now seeking to further expand their defense, political and economic ties.
