  • Pakistan: Large Karachi rally demands more steps on Kashmir

People in the city of Karachi took to the streets in their thousands to show solidarity with Kashmiris. They demanded stronger actions from Pakistani government as well as the UN against recent moves by India in Kashmir.

According to Press TV, Protesters in Karachi say the Western powers’ indifference towards India’s moves in Kashmir will embolden New Delhi to take further radical measures. However, they say they will continue to speak up for the rights of Kashmiris.

Speakers at the rally called on the international community to hold New Delhi responsible for its crimes against Kashmiris. They also called for a united stance against India.

Participants also denounced the silence of some Arab countries on the issue of Kashmir. Indian-administered Kashmir came to the limelight after India revoked its semi-autonomous status last month.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran khan has warned that the issue of Kashmir could lead to a war between Islamabad and New Delhi if the international community failed to intervene.

The United Nations Security Council Resolution 47 adopted in April 1948 calls for a free and impartial plebiscite to let Kashmiris use their right of self-determination. Decades on, people of Kashmir are still deprived of this crucial right.
