Pakistani Shia Muslims commemorate Ashura under heavy rain in Parachinar
Pars Today – Despite heavy storms and rainfall, Shia Muslims in Parachinar, northwestern Pakistan, marked Ashura through traditional chest-beating and mourning chants in the streets.
A poignant video circulating widely on social media during the first ten days of Muharram 1447 captures Shia mourners in Parachinar braving intense storms and heavy rain to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH), the third Shias' Imam.
Despite years of hardship, including road blockades, severe movement restrictions, and near-besiegement, Parachinar continues to demonstrate resilience and unwavering commitment to religious observances.
Muharram ceremonies in Pakistan are not exclusive to Shia Muslims; in many towns and villages, Sunni communities actively participate by distributing food and drinks to mourning processions and engaging in commemorations.
This shared presence highlights the deep cultural and religious ties embedded in Pakistani society, especially during the period of mourning for Imam Hussein (PBUH). / IRIB news agency
