OIC denounces Argentina’s decision to move embassy to occupied al-Quds

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has expressed its strong condemnation of a plan by Argentina's President Javier Milei's to move the country's embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied al-Quds.

The OIC condemned the decision as a clear violation of both international law and relevant resolutions by the United Nations, in a statement released on Wednesday.

The statement emphasized the move was particularly against Security Council Resolution 478, which urges nations with diplomatic missions in occupied al-Quds to relocate their missions from the holy city.

East al-Quds, which was taken over by Israel during the 1967 war, has since been annexed and is now regarded as an occupied territory according to international law.

The OIC statement further stated that the South American country has been urged to halt its actions and adhere to the resolution that emphasizes the preservation of the occupied city's legal and historical identity.

The OIC also underscored that the unauthorized maneuver by the Argentinean president constitutes a violation of the rights of the Palestinian population.

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas earlier said the move constitutes “an infringement of the rights of our Palestinian people to their land and a violation of the rules of international law considering al-Quds as occupied Palestinian land.”

Argentina’s president delighted his Israeli hosts upon his visit to the occupied territories on Tuesday by announcing moves to shift his country’s embassy to al-Quds.

On his first official visit since taking office, he said: “My plan is to move the embassy to west al-Quds.”

The United States initiated the move in 2018 under the presidency of Donald Trump after he recognized the city as the Israeli capital.

Argentina would become one of only a handful of countries to have its embassy in the occupied city.
