India, Pakistan developments / Tension culminates in Subcontinent
Pars Today- Tensions between India and Pakistan have culminated after New Delhi's missile attack on regions in the Pakistani-controlled Kashmir.
According to Pars Today, military tensions between the two nuclear powers of the Subcontinent have reached an unprecedented level after the Indian missile attack on some parts of the Kashmir under Pakistan's control. The clashes, stemming from the terrorist attack in Pahalgam region of the Indian-administered Kashmir in the past week, have brought the region to the verge of an all-out crisis.
The Indian government claimed on Tuesday to have hit 9 bases of terrorists in the Pakistani-administered Kashmir with missiles during an operation dubbed as "Sindoor". The Indian army described these attacks as "precise" and in a bid to implement justice. The Indian embassy in the US stressed that no civilian or military target has been struck in Pakistan. But, Islamabad called these claims as "baseless" and described the attacks as clear violation of its sovereignty.
Attacking 6 points in Pakistan
The spokesman of the Pakistani army announced that the Indian attacks on 6 regions of the country, including a dam in Kashmir, have caused the death of 26 and injury of 46 civilians.
The Pakistani Defense Minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, ruling out the Indian allegations on existence of terrorist bases, stressed that Islamabad will continue responding this aggression.
In UNSC
Pakistan, as a temporary member of the UN Security Council, informing the body, called the Indian attack as a threat for the global peace and announced that, according to article 51 of the UN Charter, Islamabad keeps the right to self-defense for itself. Islamabad has also summoned the Indian chargé d'affaires and expressed its strong protest. The Pakistani president and prime minister, also, condemned the Indian move and emphasized continuation of responses.
5 Indian jets downed
As tension persists between New Delhi and Islamabad, the Pakistani air force claimed to have shot down 5 Indian fighter jets and destroyed a military base of the country. This is while, the Indian army has rejected the Pakistani claims; yet, Pakistani sources have informed of capturing several Indian forces.
Indian air defense on alert
On the other hand, India has put all its air defense systems in the Pakistani borders on alert and some reports have been released of exchange of artillery fire in the border control line.
Call for self-restraint
Meanwhile, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, expressing concern over these clashes, called on both sides to have self-control and warned that the world cannot be witness to a military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed powers. The world community is, also, watching the developments with concern as escalation of tensions can have catastrophic consequences for the region and the world.
