World medical organization call for suspension of Israeli Medical Association’s membership

Pars Today – The medical journal The Lancet has reported the expansion of an international campaign led by physicians and health organizations from various countries calling for the suspension of the Israeli Medical Association’s membership in the World Medical Organization.

According to Pars Today, citing IRNA, The Lancet stated that this international campaign is being supported by health and human rights organizations, including the “People’s Health Movement,” “Doctors for Gaza,” and the Health Council affiliated with “Jewish Voice for Peace.”

Organizers of the campaign accuse the Israeli Medical Association of evading its ethical and professional responsibilities, saying it has remained silent in response to Israeli military attacks on hospitals, medical centers, and ambulances in the Gaza Strip, as well as the killing and detention of Palestinian medical staff.

According to the report, the petition has so far gained the support of more than 1,150 individuals and organizations active in the health sector from around the world. The initiative aims to place the issue of expelling or suspending the Israeli Medical Association on the agenda of the World Medical Assembly, which is scheduled to be held next October.

The report also points to increasing pressure and the growing international isolation of Israeli medical and academic institutions amid escalating criticism of the war in Gaza.

In this regard, the British Medical Association suspended its relations with the Israeli Medical Association in June 2025, while the South African Medical Association also severed ties in October of the same year and called for Israel’s expulsion from the World Medical Organization.

Since the beginning of the war and the genocide against Palestinians in October 2023, the Israeli regime has systematically destroyed healthcare infrastructure in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza has stated that, despite the alleged ceasefire, the Israeli regime has prevented more than 16,500 Palestinians in need of medical treatment from leaving Gaza since October last year.
