Cyberattack targets several German ministries
Pars Today – Germany’s Chancellery has announced that a cyberattack disrupted the connection of several ministries to the German government’s IT network, while investigators are working to prevent the attack from spreading and determine its severity.
According to Pars Today, citing IRNA, the German Chancellery said in a statement on Monday that investigations had revealed a security breach in the Berlin government network. All relevant agencies are working around the clock to secure the government network.
As a precautionary measure, German authorities disconnected several ministries from the network, including those responsible for climate action and building and housing. Authorities have not yet released information on any potential disruption to the ministries’ operations or identified the individual or group responsible for the cyberattack.
The Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office, the State Criminal Police Office and the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) are investigating the incident.
The statement said that securing Germany’s government network remains the top priority. It added that, for investigative reasons, no further specific information can currently be provided about the scope or background of the incident.
The network targeted in the attack, known as “BeLa,” is a secure, high-speed fiber-optic network connecting approximately 600 government and public institutions across Germany. The system is operated by the Berlin-based IT service provider ITDZ Berlin.
The cyberattack comes amid repeated warnings about growing cyber and hybrid threats targeting government institutions, businesses and critical infrastructure.
