Pars Today - The governor of Iran's Khorasan Razavi province announced the arrival of 7.5 million pilgrims to the city of Mashhad in the last 10 days of the lunar month of Safar (August 25 to September 4).

The 30th of Safar is the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Reza (PBUH), the eighth Shia Imam and a member of the Prophet's household. The holy shrine of Imam Reza is located in Mashhad, northeastern Iran, and millions of pilgrims travel to the city every year to visit the shrine.

According to Pars Today, Yaqub Ali Nazari, the governor of Khorasan Razavi, said: "Last year, we hosted 6.2 million pilgrims during this time, and it is estimated that this year, with an increase of 15 to 20 percent, we will reach around 7.5 million pilgrims."

Nazari added that since August 25, 2 million pilgrims have entered Mashhad, and it is predicted that 400,000 to 500,000 pilgrims will travel to Mashhad on foot.

Imam Reza (PBUH) was born in 148 AH in the city of Medina and was martyred on the last day of Safar in 203 AH by the Abbasid caliph. The era of Imam Reza's life and imamate was a period of increasing people's tendency towards the Prophet's household and the expansion of the popular bases of the Ahl al-Bayt.
