Pars Today — Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna has questioned the seriousness of US President Donald Trump’s purported threat to declare the Strait of Hormuz “US territory.”

According to Pars Today, citing IRNA, Mikhail Ulyanov responded sarcastically to Trump’s remarks, asking on X: “Was this a joke?”

Ulyanov added that the claim was so ridiculous that, hours after Trump made the remarks, The Wall Street Journal quoted a senior White House official as saying that the US president had not discussed declaring the Strait of Hormuz “US territory” with his advisers and that his comments were largely intended as a joke.

Earlier, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stressed that the Strait of Hormuz is Iranian and remains under Iran’s control despite the US president’s claims. He said, “The Strait of Hormuz will only be opened and closed at Iran’s command,” adding that Iran would continue its blockade until the US accepts the reality of its defeat and abandons its delusions.
