Pars Today – Transport agreements between Iran and Azerbaijan were signed during the 17th joint meeting of the two countries, focusing on transport corridors, border bridges, and railway projects.

According to Pars Today, citing the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, Houshang Bazvand, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development and CEO of the Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructure Company, announced on Tuesday that a set of transport cooperation agreements had been signed between Iran and Azerbaijan.

The agreements cover the development of transit corridors, border bridge infrastructure, and railway transportation, and aim to strengthen infrastructural cooperation and facilitate trade exchanges between the two countries.

Bazvand said that the development of transport corridors, especially along the Jolfa–Kalaleh corridor axis, was reviewed, noting that good understandings were reached between the two sides that could accelerate the implementation of joint projects.

He also announced the finalization of the status of the Aghband–Kalaleh border bridge, stating that the bridge will play an important role in facilitating cross-border movement and expanding economic exchanges between Iran and Azerbaijan.

Focus on rail transport and Astara cargo terminal

Bazvand added that in the rail sector, the two sides agreed to accelerate coordination and understandings necessary for advancing joint projects.

The development of railway transportation within regional corridor frameworks was identified as one of the main priorities of the Iran–Azerbaijan transport agreements, including cooperation related to the Astara railway terminal.

He also referred to the status of the Astara cargo transshipment facility, stating that existing problems in this sector will be resolved within the next two months to facilitate smoother cargo movement. Located as a key connection point between rail and road networks linking the region, Astara plays an important role in regional transit flows.

Bazvand emphasized that full implementation of the transport agreements could generate significant economic benefits for both sides and help upgrade regional transit cooperation, particularly within the framework of the North–South Transport Corridor.
