  • Sachs: Israel’s addiction to war hinders regional peace

Pars Today - Renowned American economist Jeffrey Sachs described Israel as being “addicted to war,” stating that without U.S. support, the regime would be forced to pursue diplomacy.

According to Pars Today, Sachs, in an interview commenting on U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies, said Trump seeks peace, but this is only possible if he avoids following the extremism of Netanyahu’s cabinet. The U.S. must prioritize its own interests in West Asia, not Israel’s demands.
Sachs emphasized: “Israelis have never engaged in real diplomacy and are addicted to war. The world cannot be managed based on Netanyahu’s desires.”

The American economist suggested that Trump could pave the way for peace by recognizing Palestine based on international borders. Sachs stated: “If Trump supports Palestine’s UN membership, he could restore peace to the region.”

Sachs criticized the Biden administration’s unconditional support for Netanyahu, saying it has dragged the U.S. into endless wars. He added: “If Netanyahu reduces reliance on U.S. military aid, it would show his understanding of Washington’s policy shift.”

Sachs called for halting Israel’s expansion and establishing a Palestinian state, noting: “Without an independent Palestine, normalization with Arab states is impossible.”

Commenting on developments in Syria and Trump’s potential meeting with Abu Mohammad al-Julani, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, Sachs said: “Events in Syria since 2011 were aimed at regime change, leading to 14 years of slaughter. U.S. policy in Syria was a stereotypical neoconservative approach.”

Sachs added: “All Middle East wars have been destructive for the U.S. By following Netanyahu and neocons, America created this crisis in Syria.”
According to Sachs, Israel’s continued warmongering not only threatens regional peace but, without U.S. support, would force it to reassess its approach. Active diplomacy and support for Palestinian rights are key to Middle East stability.
