American Think-Tank warns: Trump's Syrian policy will benefit terrorists
Pars Today- Experts of American Enterprise Institute called Donald Trump's move to remove Syrian sanctions as a false action.
According to Pars Today, Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at this think-tank believes that Donald Trump met with Mohammad al-Jolani, head of the Syrian provisional government, while, six months ago, few people would predict such a meeting due to al-Jolani's record of terrorist measures as the leader of the Syrian al-Qaeda and announcement of $10 million prize for arresting him.
In Rubin's opinion this meeting was not surprising since Trump enjoys breaking traditional diplomatic rules and had already showed this behavior in his first term when he changed his policy towards Taliban and North Korea.
This expert stressed, "Removal of sanctions against Syria was a hasty move from another aspect, too, because Jolani fails to control even his own group rather than the whole Syria."
Michael Rubin, referring to the internal rift in the ruling group of Tahrir Al-Sham and the massacre of Alawites in the country, made it clear, "In such circumstances, removal of sanctions, merely on the basis of "accountable ruling", means to inject money into the pockets of those who used to welcome the attacks of al-Qaeda on New York, Pennsylvania and Washington DC."
He added, "Removal of anti-Syria sanctions by Trump will undermine broader efforts for confronting terrorism as it will convey the message that there are two ways to escape from the terrorist label: real reforms or escalation of violence and reinforcement of power."
This analyst concluded, "Syria should return to the world community, but this return should be based on the reality of the measures in the country rather than the remarks of a certain leader. Prioritizing the promises of Mohammad Jolani over his practical measures might be a historical mistake which can lead to formation of al-Qaeda axis from Ankara to Damascus."
